Born in 1935, the Zurich-based graphic designer completed his training in the specialist class at the Allgemeine Gewerbeschule in Basel under Armin Hofmann, Emil Ruder and Donald Brun in 1954. He then worked in the advertising studio at J.R. Geigy AG, Basel, until 1958, before moving to Josef Müller-Brockmann’s advertising studio in Zurich (1958–1961). From 1958 onwards, he assisted Müller-Brockmann as director of the specialist class in graphic design at Zurich School of Arts and Crafts (KGSZ), where he first taught a preliminary course in writing before going on to lecture in photographics, typography and layouting in the specialist photography class. In 1961, he founded Gruppe 3, a design studio, together with Alfred Aebersold and Herbert Merz. Jörg Hamburger’s outstanding works include designing and advertising the exhibition ‘Modellfall Citroën’ (‘The Citroën Model’) at the Zurich Museum of Arts and Crafts as well as numerous posters for exhibitions and youth sports that were awarded prizes by the Swiss Federal Department of Home Affairs.
