Hans-Ulrich Allemann (1944)

After completing a preliminary course at the Allgemeine Gewerbeschule Basel (Basel School of Design), Hans-Ulrich Allemann graduated in 1961 from the graphic design class taught by Armin Hofmann, Emil Ruder, Donald Brun, and Walter Bodmer. After completing his training, he worked at the Erwin Halpern advertising agency in Zurich. As part of a cultural exchange between the US and Europe, he was offered a teaching position in the graphic design department at the Kansas City Art Institute in 1967 and was involved in setting up a new training program. In 1969, after returning to Switzerland, he worked at the Miedinger studio and later again at the Halpern agency.

In 1973, a new teaching position took him to the Philadelphia College of Art (since 1987, the University of the Arts). He was head of the graphic design department for three years and also worked as a freelance designer. In 1984, he founded the design consulting firm Allemann Almquist & Jones (now aajdesign) in Philadelphia together with Jan C. Almquist and Dana Jones, while remaining an adjunct professor at the university. In 2009, he ended his work at the firm and the university. Since then, he has been working as an artist and freelance design and training consultant.

The work of Hans-Ulrich Allemann and his company is recognized by national and international organizations and has been published numerous times. His posters are held in the archives of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., the Vignelli Center for Design Studies at the Rochester Institute of Technology, the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris, and the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich.
